I saw this today.
http://www.atarigames.com/ataritri [...] .jpeg.html

If you look in the back row left there is a file called "The Last
StarFighter".
Rumor has it that this game was never produced but this picture is from
the Atari archive. Either this is a practical joke [I doubt] or some
documentation really does exist.
any thoughts?

everytime I try to access that I keep getting a "Bad Encrypt
Dictionary" error in acrobat. Any idea? Is the Reader I'm using too
out of date? Is the file bad, or my copy of acrobat reader?
Thanks,

I created all of the docs with Acrobat Pro 7.0. You may need to
upgrade your reader.

I can't access the PDF file posted in one of the followup messages,
so I don't know if the proposal was for an arcade game or computer game.
However, there was a Last Starfighter computer game that
was created. It was later renamed "Star Raiders II".

I'm not sure I'd be wanting to install Reader 7 just yet for the sake
of reading an Atari document!!

I read somewhere about 2 weeks ago that there are still issues with it
on linux (foreign language support) and Mac OS X (forget what
problems!) - that's why i plumped for 6 at the highest.

At work we still insist on receiving files in v5 max from clients. If
they go higher they have to resubmit. Most clients are still producing
v3 or 4 though so it's a non issue.

What was the driving force behind producing it all in v7??

Would like to know what the features were that it gave above and beyond
5.

I haven't used 7, but I have to get 6 because older versions would not let
me convert PDFs to certain graphic file formats.

That's what was donated to me. I am running OS X and I have not had
any issues....yet. I am not using any high end features, but I don't
think I wan't to go back and re-output the 12,000 files I have already
created in 7.0.

This is the proposal for the Arcade Version. I have dug up partial
bits of source code, but only bits of it.

"Lennie Scwartz and his Billie Goat Myrtle"

is that a trick question?

LOL!! Fair enough, neither would I want to either!

Interesting that you're running OSX. Maybe I'll go up to 7 too then. It
was one Apple's Discussion forums that I was reading all about the v7
problems and the recommendations not to use it. Sounds like it's been
resolved...

It was a fake cab if i remeber my trivia correctly. Some super computer
driven graphics (back in the 80's) It was sound effects and probably a
blank screen with the nice graphics overlayed in post production.

The movie graphics were rendered on a Cray Y-MP.

Post-processing overlaid graphics didn't exist back then, matte was what
was used, and it was usually obvious, Star Wars (series) being the
notable exception.

From what I recall, the 'game' screen shots were simply a TV monitor in
the cabinet running a generated scene from tape.

Judging by "; STELLA REGISTERS" in that listing, I'd say the source you
linked is Atari 2600 code.

And iirc Tod Frye was the infamous programmer who did 2600 pacman.
Fingers are still being pointed over that piece of junk.

Well, maybe its the bottle of wine, but I was getting all nostalgic and
sentimental reading that outline design for The Last Starfighter ...
you see ... the author is a certian "Chris J Horseman". Thats the VIP
"dude" that interviewed me when I thought I was off to california from
here in the rainy UK, for a job in the arcade games design division.
Trouble was, just as I was about to 'go west' ... Atari inc
spectacularly imploded, and the job was no more. CJH dissapeard off the
radar quicker than a rat out of a drainpipe, and that was that. Luckily
I was re-routed to Atari Europe.

JMTPW on a saturday evening :)

And who was it that wanted that Bubbles Cocktail - I've got a minty
mint working one sat here right now, doing service as a side table. You
could adapt to a Robotron Cocktail with a pair of Darrins Robotron CP's
....

Archer.

And given that, I have to ask... How much more is there? There's
a 2600 programming mailing list, and I'd LOVE to run it by the
guys on the list...
