hi, i have a asteroids upright that i'm having a monitor issue with. At
least i think the problem stems from the monitor chassis not the
mainboard. The game sounds and runs fine but i cant see much of the
video as its all shifted to the right side of the screen (while standing
in front)..every now and then i will catch a glimps of a rock etc that
will come slightly into view but the little that i sometimes see kinda
looks distorted. Anyone have any ideas where i can check..
thanks in advance,
Jeff

could be a deflection transistor on the chassis, could be something on
the defelction board, could be the analog section of the MPU. The easy
things to check are the deflection transistors, then the MPU outputs
(scope helps a ton), then the deflection board.

oh, yea, reflow the solder on all the header pins on the deflector
board since they are often a problem.

thanks Kirb! i did also notice that the metal frame where some of the
transistors are mounted to was VERY warm, almost hot just after game
being on for maybe 5 mins.

tks again, Jeff

Try adjusting the pots for the X and Y on the game board itself. It
could just be they're turned up high enough so that you're not seeing
much on-screen at once. You won't hurt anything tweaking with them,
and you'll get an idea of how each adjusts the image. It's not that
uncommon - I fixed a "non working" Lunar Lander board that way once.

:)

thanks for the tip, but the game was working well until recently..for a
short time before it got as bad as it is now, i could just tap on the
side of the cabinet and it would clear up..tapping the cabinet does not
do anything anymore
:)
thanks

Kirb, i removed the deflection board to check for cold solder on the
header pins and did find one that was forsure cracked. fixed it and
reflowed all other pins while at it..figured i may of got lucky..nope
still the same prob..i think next i'll try the deflection transistors as
you suggested. Is there an easy way to check them?

hello, well it turns out that i have a blown deflection transistor on
the chassis. its one of the 2N3792 in position q609. any ideas what
caused this to blow? wondering also if all 4 chassis mounted deflection
transistors should be replaced while i'm at it?..the monitor will need
to be removed from the cab to do this so i plan on doing a cap kit also
and anything else that makes sence to do while its out of the cabinet
thanks, Jeff

If you buy the "deluxe" cap kit it will include the chassis transistors
and it's a good idea to replace all four of them, there are two 2N3792
and two 2N3716. Remember to use heat sink compound under the
transistors, and test for no continuity between the transistors and
monitor frame when you're done.

A great repair reference is at www.ionpool.net
