Death Race is really rare! It has the distinction of being the first
ever controversial video game. It even got banned! (The reason being
the zombies you drive over look a lot like regular people and the
artwork of Death driving the car lead parents to believe the game was
saying to kill people with your car). If I had the space I'd bid on it
myself.
I have seen one locally but it was not turned on. The main thing I
noticed on it was the gear shifts looked like they had rotted away. The
ones on this machine look brand new. Definitely a good one to have in a
collection if you want a machine that has a story behind it.
I believe this one comes from the Computer Space / Pong era so there's
no ROMs in it (hence it is not available in MAME either). So everything
inside would be components and no chips. Therefore a little more tricky
to service.
Nice machine though.

Please do not take this wrong but I am not too impressed with the high
gloss black paint they used on the sides...takes away from the
"originality" of the game. Almost like it is over-restored.....a semi
flat black would have looked soooo much original and better. Not
saying this will hurt the final value due to the rarity but please
guys, use a better choice of paint next time. Still, a very sweet game
to own.

The unoriginality of the finish on the sides really detracts from the game
in my opinion.. it also really amplifies the damage to the edges of the
machine pretty much all around as you can see where the puffing is pretty
clearly. Attention to detail makes all the difference in a restoration of
a rare piece, take the time to fix things to their original condition. This
particular machine while 'clean' could use some much increased attention in
the detail area.. Many of the more experienced restorers probably see all
the things I do with the machine.

I think I'd rather have the Un-restored machine any day. I like games
that have the "USED" look to them, it's just amazing that it's survived
this long, and it's in the condition that it is, best to leave it alone.
