I have a couple of millipede boards here. Both have a small problem. On
one, it is missing the firing sound. All other sounds appear to be there.
On the other one, there are a couple of lines through the DDT's. Whats
weird is that I can't get either of the boards to get into test mode. I
switched it to test mode, and I just get some colored screens that change
colors every time I push the fire button.

Well, that is test mode to an extent, the 1p, 2p, and fire buttons
should change diffent aspects, like FG color, BG color and scroll
through the sprites. There should be text on that screen, which
represents the dipswitch settings. If there isn't then something is
wrong. Places to look are RAM chips and reseat roms 1st.

Millipede has two test mode options.
The typical one which displays the settings, text characters, inputs,
etc. Pressing buttons in this mode will change the background,
foreground colors etc as well as make beeps and you can move the
trackball.

The other testmode (probably not documented) is if one
of your coin inputs is held active when entering testmode
it will display the blank (colored) screen with a bunch of
large solid rectangles of various shades of similar colors.
Pressing the coin input again and it will show a screen
full of dots. If you are seeing this, one of your coin inputs
might be stuck active.

All sounds are generated by the pokeys. So my guess is
you are missing all the sounds that are generated by
that particular pokey, not just the fire sound.
Swap around pokeys and you can probably narrow down
which one is bad. As well, once you can get into
the normal testmode, it will do a pokey random number
generator test. Failed Pokeys are indicated by P0 or
P1 being displayed.

I have some other information on my Multipede trouble
shooting page. Including sample screen shots of what
test mode looks like.

Wow, all these years owning one and I didn't know about that other mode.
I'd seen the dots before and thought something was malfunctioning.
Must've been a freak chance of having the coin switch down while playing
with something inside the door.

Thanks everyone for the info. The missing fire sound was a bad pokey. And
you are correct, I am getting the "undocumented" test mode. Pusing the coin
input shows a screen full of dots.
