Looking to buy a laptop to use for a CS degree (programming)

Hello, I'm going to be attending college and working on a Computer Science degree. I'm looking for a laptop that will allow me to do whatever sort of programming I might need to do (I anticipate a lot of stuff like Java, C++, HTML, Python, Ruby, CSS, PHP, etc.) in a timely and efficient fashion.

I don't have a specific budget but under $1000 would be best and preferably lower if possible ($500-800 range).

I gather I'll want something that is reasonably speedy.

I don't need a particularly fancy GPU as I have a gaming desktop for that function, but some ability to play modern games on say a low-mid settings would be nice.

I've read a good resolution important for programming (to see more stuff!) so that is important. Not sure if I should be looking for a 15' display or a 17'.

A HDMI slot would be nice so I can hook it up to my TV.

Some laptops I have been looking at are refurbished Asus G74/75s:

They are in the $900 range, but is that overkill for the GPU? Considering I don't NEED to play tons of games on it, just would like to play some. Or am I better off looking at laptops that are fast but don't have expensive GPUs (like would I save a significant amount of money by doing this)?

Thanks for all of the help.
