Help from you hardware Guru's out there

I have a newbie type question. If I have an older AGP 1X mobo, can I put a newer 2 or 4 X graphics card on it? Will the 2 and 4 X cards scale back to 1 X?

I can build file servers and setup/maintain networks but I haven't do a lot w/ other that boring, plain PCI video cards...

most will scale back- normally in the tech references of each card it will list their compatability. ie. 1x/2x/4x compatable.

Most cards will do it automatically, others require jumper changes. The Viper 770 is an example of one card that had jumper setting for 1x-2x or 4x.

Most AGP cards are at least 1X AGP, but some are only 2x/4x and no 1x compatible.
