Alright I'm really starting to lose faith in good old Tom's CPU reviews. For some reason he can pull out a GF3 when ever something solely video card related comes out, but when its time to test cpu vs cpu all he ever uses is a GF2 Ultra!!!!!!! Why not use a GF3 in the latest P4 vs Athlon? The story of the past was to use the fastest graphics card availible for CPU tests because the high end tests were usually limited by the graphics card. I think this bullsh|t!!! In the Geforce3 Detonator 4 vs ATI 8500 he only used a P4 why no Athlon to compare the two cards and proccessors? Im sure people would be interested to know how well the Radeon stacks up again the GF3 on both an P4 and Athlon platform. Maybe Tom just doesn't want to show how much preformance gain there is on a P4 with a GF3 due to Nvidia and Intel's optimazations over a Athlon. Thats my consipirasy theory and I'm sticking to it, I have already emailed Tom about it. Haven't got a responce back yet either.
Blitz Packer Brew, lifes better when you're blitzed!!
All you need in processor tests is a decent video card. A GF DDR would probably suffice. The only time when a video card becomes the bottleneck in a system is when running 3D games at high resolutions and colour depths. This is why you never see any Q3 1600x1200x32 with FSAA and all the graphical details turned on in a cpu review. The only gaming benchmark that really shows off the cpu very well is the 640x480x16 low detail run. Since this does not stress the video card very much at all, it doesn't really matter which one you use (with the obvious exceptions of a old old cards like the Voodoo 2 of course).
"The story of the past was to use the fastest graphics card availible for CPU tests because the high end tests were usually limited by the graphics card."
A test that is limited by the graphics card is not good as a cpu bench at all. All you have to do in order to effectively test the cpu speed is to make sure that the cpu is the bottleneck in the system.
i suddenly realized how much we all bitch....i'd be interested in the two different processors in the video card review as well, but those tests can take bloody forever to run. the p4 obviously knocked the athlon out of the water (albeit with a 600mhz advantage [antiflame] i realize that's the fastest amd has now [/antiflame]). and the gf2 ultra is sufficient to compare the processors on an average (above average in my oppinion) system. if tom uses only the top of the line (and often not redily available)commponents in his reviews they aren't as applicable to many readers...namely, poor students like me.
"no vesige of a begining, no prospect of an end, when we all disenigrate, it'll all happpen again."
Well i would say its a good pricing for students and Folk w/o lots of cash. $299 for a Card that GF3 speed and isnt strip of feature's like Dual head, tv out, Hardware DVD, 400mhz RAMDAC.
