printer not installed

I am not able to install my HP deskjet 840C on my Windows XP prof
computer. I get an error that the operation can not be completed. I
have tried deleting LPT1 and adding it again, still no luck. Please
advise what should i do now.

Presumably your user account has administrator privileges.

Are you sure the driver(s) you are trying to install are for Windows XP -
and for the version of XP you have installed - such as SP2?

Perhaps your print spooler has stopped.
From the command prompt, type


net start spooler


(and hit enter!)
