Alright I need some help, of course. I recently shipped my computer to college via UPS(never again!). Unfortunatly when it arrived the HSF had completely been snapped off the CPU and, when put back on, the computer fails to boot. My guess is that the HDD has been busted, due to it's sensitivity to shock and my idiocy of leaving it in the computer. What happens when I boot is that all the devices continually search themselves, including the hard drive. I never hear the little beep that tells me everything is ok, and the hard drive just keeps churning and stopping and churning and stopping. Luckily, this thing was insured, but I want to fix it now, so I'm wondering if my HDD suspicions are correct or if there could be more to this predicament. I'm skeptical of the CPU and Mobo because the HSF had fallen off and who knows what it slammed into. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Call home.
Ask parents for money.
Go buy a laptop.
Get a carying case and laptop cable lock too.
UPS will blame you for not packing your computer properly. It will take months to get an insurance refund. Even if you get a refund it will not be the value of your computer.
Lifesucks. You just learned a hard lesson.

It should still post, and by the way ups has a policy. If it can't withstand a 4 foot drop then it is not packaged correctly and not their fault. You have to read all of the fine print.

So probably Mobo and/or processor? Although I don't know how that would bust, unless maybe the loose HSF bashed into. I don't see much sign of physical damage. Is the mobo sensitive to shock?
if when the heatsink came off, which would take a fairly hard shock went flying and hit your mother board- which is VERY possible, it may have nicked it even the slightest bit which will kill your mb. It is not only sensitive to shock but to heavy metal objects being scrathed accross it at high velocities as well. I'd try it in another computer, but my guess is your hard drive is probobly ok.
Ok, so you think hard drive is cool, I'm guessing the processor is ok. I'll try replacing the mobo, luckily I got the sis735 so it's fairly inexpensive.
what kind of processor was it? Is it possible it fried when u turned on w/o heatsink? By the way, when I purchased my new comp, which was $3,000 UPS dropped in a deep puddle of water. Everything was soaked. They also did that to my $8,000 computer 4 years ago (but not as severly)! Goddamn!

Ok, I was just inspecting the RAM, for whatever reason, and when I was about to put it back in a little metal piece fell off. I was like, crap just when I thought it couldn't get more broken. So then I noticed that there were a bunch of them, so I tried to break more off, seeing as it was busted already. Well, low and behold, the others were basically glued on, very hard to snap them off. So now I'm thinking the HSF busted that little piece off and that's all that's wrong and everything is peachy. I tend to be optimistic. So I'm gonna have to find some RAM to test her out. I'll let you know.
