I bought a a toshiba laptop a week ago and today I went to get on the
computer and an error message popped up and continually scrolled down the
screen. The message: media test faliure, check cable
exiting PXE ROM
I have tried so many things, but I would appreciate it greatly if you could
give me any advice.

Hello KC,
that message should only appear if you are trying to boot from a network. I
suspect if you were using a LAN boot you would have said, so the first thing
you need to do is go to your laptop BIOS and check Boot from Lan is not set
as a boot option. If it is try to disable it. That might stop the message
appearing, but unless Boot from LAN is set before boot from hard disk in the
boot sequence you will still have a problem. Check boot from hard disk is
the first or second option for booting in your laptop bios. Now save bios
changes and reboot the laptop. If it now starts XP then your done, if it
does not and gives a no OS message then suspect a hard disk problem. As your
laptop is a week old I would get it replaced, but if you prefer and feel
brave, open the case and remove the hard disk- disconnecting the IDE cable.
Carefully reconnect the cable making sure it is pushed fully home and
reinsert the drive in the laptop. The procedure sounds a bit scary but
actually is pretty easy-having said that the laptop is new and you shouldn't
have to do this. Hope that helps.
