I have a compaq laptop (P3 128 RAM) using comcast cable and I want to go
wireless.
I haven't done to much research on this subject, but I really don't want to
spend more than I have to.
I'm looking at Linksys Routers and PCMICA card.
What would you recommend?
Linksys 11mbps or the Linksys 54mbps routers (54mbps is twice the cost than
the 11mbps)
This laptop is mainly for surfing the web and keeping books.
Please give me advice and why one would be better than the other.
Thanks, Jeff

Just my opinion Jeffrey...

Going on the net with a laptop using wireless networking is easy...
Going on the net with a laptop using wireless that also has your
accounting system on it (or checkbook program) is stupidity.
You are begging to be a victim of identity theft.

If you just need Internet access, 11Mbps is lot faster then you cable
connection, 54Mbps is of no advantage to you.
Linksys has good reputation. Draytek Vigor is better, but more expensive.

Presumably your banking is done via SSL encrypted websites and using
wireless connection doesn't make any difference in this respect.
Nevertheless you should use firewall, wifi / WEP encryption and MAC
filtering.

Martin

You disagree, Doug? Your cable connection runs at 5 Mbps or higher,
the effective throughput of 802.11b ? Or you know a way to squeeze
more than 5 Mbps of LAN-side throughput through a cable connection rated
at only about 2.5 Mbps ?

If you have -local- LAN accesses, then Yes, 54 Mbps *might* be better
for you -- but Martin² started with "If you just need Internet access",
which doesn't apply to the LAN-access case.

I think doug might have been noting that while its true that the speed of
your internet connection will be well below that of the wireless, if you
have a network ,then internet traffic is not all there is.
For example I stream audio round my house via a mostly wired 10/100
network, and although its nice to be able to listen to music in my garden
via a wireless enabled device, 11b only just cuts that mustard, and I get
quite a few dropouts.

Sam's Club has a Linksys "b" starter pack with wireless router and card for
$77. If you have a membership with them... go for it.

First of all, I was not disagreeing. Was I a bit surprised? Yes.
Apparently, I learned something new today and I am grateful for it.
Thanks for the reply.
