I am just wondering if the laptop GTX460M is better or worse than an HD 6870 desktop gpu. I am looking to get a refurbished Gaming laptop and just want a desktop comparison. The laptop in question is the ASUS G53JW. These are the specs:
Intel Core i7-740QM 1.73GHz,
500GB HDD,
Blu-ray Player/DVDRW,
15.6" Full HD,
Windows 7 Home Premium.

The GTX460M is significantly inferior. A 6870 is on par with.a 580M or 6990M. I.e. the top mobile GPUs of the last gen. You're looking at a mid range mobile GPU from two generations ago

Pretty much. The GTX460 1GB card is equal to the 6850. So even if it was a desktop card it would still be slower. 6870 would be much faster.

If you want to see how the GTX 460m ranks, you can click on the following link.

Despite it's age, the GTX 460m is still considered a Class 1 graphic card for laptop. However, it is ranked at the bottom of Class 1 now. Included as part of the list are a few scatterings of desktop top graphic (black colored text). The GTX 460m is ranked below the Radeon HD 4850 and the nVidia GTS 450. The Radeon HD 6850 is ranked towards the top of the Class 1 list; top 25%.

For a single mobile graphic card solution you will need a GTX 675m to come pretty close to the Radeon HD 6870. Or the GT 675mx to get the same performance.
