missing files after repair install

after a repair install the entire file My Pictures and most of my media
player files are missing. search done but absolutely nowhere to be found.
Upon putting new jpg files in, XP reopened a new My Pictures file but none of
my many many video or photo files are there. thank god i had most backed up,
but i did lose a few, and would like to know if there is any chance for them
before i overhaul this beast. i will of course later be asking for help in
this later, she is old and on her last legs i am afraid
