Is 64MB worth it?

As I've read somewhere, 64MB memory on graphic cards are supposedally only needed for 3D rendering in really high resolutions (1200x1024 and up), but only GeForce 2 Ultra is currently capable of handling such demand. Is that true? And if true, does that mean 64MB of memory worthless for GeForce 2 GTS and below?

Btw, is there a benchmark comparison of two similar cards with different memory amount somewhere?

As the video cards get faster and faster it will need more memory, just as a computer does. This is because the CPU will process the information so fast that it will need larger chunks of memory to read and write to. If not enough memory is present than you will get a slow down in processing. This holds true for most situations. NVidia has specified the minimum memory config for the Ultra is 64mb DDR memory. I am sure this is not a gimic, as the memory is needed with this card. The normal GTS cards are 200mhz cores with 33mhz DDR memory, have 32mb normally, and a few with 64mb. But 64mb on this card does not have a huge impact, as the PRO version of it can benefit from 64mb in higher resolutions, the 32mb on the GTS2 and PRO is fine in most situations. What you really pay for on the ULTRA is not really 64mb, but the best NVidia Cores, higher core speed of 250mhz+, and DDR memory capable of speeds at 460mhz+. The DDR memory at this speed is very costly, as well as the fact that NVidia charges a premium for the best cores. The Ultra is much faster in higher resolutions, and at the time sees the biggest benefit, but that is only because at lower resolutions the video card is not the bottle neck, the Main CPU of the computer is the bottleneck. This is why you see the Intel Pentium 4 @ 1.5Ghz beating AMD TBirds @ 1.2Ghz at lower resolutions. The Intel P4 CPU is not as high a bottle neck at those speeds. Most people play Quake 3 at 1024x768, and until 1280x1024 or higher becomes more of a standard, the Ultra is just too expensive to justify over the GTS 2 or PRO versions with 32mb. Tough decision though if money is burning a hole in your pocket, so buy the Ultra to fulfill your spending urges, and feel bad about it later, but enjoy the fact knowing that you currently have the fastest card on the market.
