Net connection works but sharing doesnt

What I do in a case like this, where there are only a couple of machines
involved is to:

1. Completely disable file and printer sharing.
2. Install the NETBEUI protocol (on XP it is on the CD-ROM in the
VALUEADD/Microsoft/NET/NETBEUI folder. It doesn't get installed by
default. The reason I use NETBEUI is that it is a NON-ROUTABLE
protocol. (Yes, I know it broadcasts itself all over the network but
with only a couple of computers it's not an issue.)
3. Once you install NetBeui, filesharing will be enabled ONLY for
NetBeui. The checkbox in the network settings properties will be
grey with a checkmark indicating it is only active for a subset of
the available protocols.

Scrub that, it was the firewall that was causing the problem, it
worked a treat thanks!

If the machines can see each other, but you get permissions errors, the
network structure (the wireless and router) are probably working properly.
Instead, you simply have something blocking traffic.

Common causes of this are a lack of proper (matching) accounts on the
machines, and most importantly, a firewall that is not configured to permit
traffic on the local network.

Do you have a firewall, for example Norton Internet Security, installed?
If so, click on the Personal Firewall section of the main app, and choose
Configure.. then look for Networking and permit by either range or specific
IP addresses. If this is not done, you will see the other machines but not
gain access.
