i know someone with a MATROX 400 dual head. he runs two screens as one [doubles the width res]. so if the second screen was smaller, the res would be very small!
i am looking at getting a GeForce 2MX [asus V7100/2ID]. is this the same scenario?
or can i run a 19" and a 17" independendly [high res on one and low on the other]???
any advice would be much appreciated!

Check out the new Radeon VE 32DDR. It's got dual monitor support and a video out. And you can use different rez settings on each monitor (in win98 and winME) I believe the price was something like $199CDN on the ATI web site.
