Toshiba laptop, A305 - S6864, Model - PSAGCU-02Q015. Four years old.
MS Windows Vista Home Premium, 6.0.6002. Service pack 2, build 6002. x64.
Inter Core 2 Duo CPU. P8400 @ 2.26 GHz.
Physical memory 4.0 GB. 3.41 GB avail.
Virtual mem 8.17 GB. 7.70 GB avail.
Recently, laptop started freezing up; no real pattern to the when the freeze up occurred. Ran the installed diagnostics and everything passed. Things deteriorated to the point the laptop only started in safe mode. Tried Startup Repair and after about 15 seconds the screen froze with a black screen with a status bar (frozen) and the words "Microsoft Corporation" at the bottom of the screen. Must use the power button to shut down and then restart the laptop. Upon restart, the cycle repeats.
Tried System Restore but laptop kept freezing up no matter which older version I picked.
I reloaded the operating system from the restore disk. The laptop ran properly for a few days and then the failure pattern above started again.
In Safe Mode there is no sound and I cannot start MS Word 2010 (a legal version). Word tries to start but gets to a point where a message box opens and says that
"Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this application. A repair attempt failed or was canceled by the user. The application will now shut down."
I tried to reinstall/repair Office 2010 and tried to install Open Office 3.3 but the computer says it
"The Windows Installer service is not accessible in Safe Mode. Please try again when your computer is not in Safe Mode. Or you can use System Restore to return your machine to a previous good state."
Are there any suggestions to get the laptop running properly?
