Hey,
I am in need of a new laptop, as my mac wont do DOTA 2, ever...

i am desperatly searching the net for a good deal, and there are so many of them out there, so i was thinking that you could help me out,

there are a few things that i am concerned,

i want to be able to play DOTA 2, and SC2 in ultra
the weight/size of the laptop does not matter, at all, it can be 30lb, i wont care
the battery time does not matter,
all i want is a gaming laptop, maybe with a baclit keyboard, to do my LAN gaming on

i am willing to pay aything up to 900 pounds to have it delivered, in england, pref before the holidays end.

cheers

You are going to need an extra strong desk to hold 900 pounds.
December 17, 2012 9:41:51 PM

Ahh, well, i was not meaning pounds, as in LB, but as in the uk currency,

its the equvilant of 1,450 bucks

Not going to happen. Not for 900 pounds.

Would you consider a small-form-factor desktop? My desktop is smaller than an xbox, has handles, and is equipped with the best gaming CPU and 3rd best gaming GPU on the planet.
December 17, 2012 10:05:34 PM

Sry cant do that, i need to be able to use it at school aswell,
woulndt 900 quid be enough for a HD7970? wich is suoposed to run dota @ultra, anyways, if its impossible, i would leke the best possible for this kind of price, thx

Well, the problem is that you're looking at mobile parts, which have had their kneecaps shattered by the need to not produce heat.

The best mobile i7 is about as good as the worst normal i5. Same thing works with graphics cards - they simply don't have high performance.
December 17, 2012 10:26:57 PM

Still, i have my laptop on a cooling pad, this does reduce the heat by a bit, but i do see your wiewpoint, still, any suggestions, or are there any retailers in the UK, that i can look at?

Yeah, but that doesn't make a difference - the people making the laptops are the ones overly worried about heat. Most people don't use a cooling pad.

I don't know if you can fit it into your budget, or if they even ship to the UK, but the only premade manufacturers in the US are Origin and Falcon - both make decent rigs at fair prices, and both do laptops, too.

Just do yourself a favor and don't buy an alienware, period.

I Know, ive been looking at Sager, and they look pretty beast, prob is, they are based in america, almost 250 bucks in shipping
December 17, 2012 10:37:30 PM

It would appear that their cheapest laptop is about 2K, a wee bit above my budget, cheers anyway :)

Ouch, sorry to hear that. It's going to be a fairly common problem, though. Laptops that can actually GAME are going to be expensive. :/
December 17, 2012 11:08:31 PM

Yeah, anyways, have you got anything that will do DOTA @ med? cheers :)

Hi :)

I own computer shops in the UK and we sell lappies as well...

NOT possible on that budget.... add another £1500 and maybe, but for £900 you could build a very nice gaming PC that will outperform ANY lappy you could buy...

All the best Brett :)

Mobile i7's are about equal to lower end i5's in single thread performance and about equal to or better than in multithread (because of hyperthreading). You are unlikely to experience any kind of cpu bottleneck unless you have two 680m's. The entry level i7 3630qm runs at 2.4 ghz with turbo to 3.2 (four cores). This is a very potent processor which is unlikely to give you problems in any kinds of games.

For instance the i5 2500k gets about 5.4 cinebench 11.5 multithreaded (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/345) and 1.47 singlethreaded (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/344).

The i7 3630qm (im going to use the 100 Mhz slower i7 3610qm because benchmarks for the 3630qm are harder to find) gets about 6.23 multithreaded and 1.37 single threaded (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/621)

In fact the i7 3630qm outperforms the 2500k in many tasks. Benchmarks here http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmar...

Very close single thread performance and slightly superior multithread (Surprisingly an i7 laptop is better for cpu heavy apps than an i5 desktop). Other apps are similar.

900 pounds can buy a nice laptop that can handle many games. Not everyone needs at 7970 Ghz edition to be content. Also please remember that if he is buying a desktop it can be more expensive than one thinks if one needs a monitor, os, keyboard (which will cost about $250).

A gt 660m is very close to a desktop 650.

The OP is also playing dota and starcraft 2, not bf3 or crysis. He can get over 60 fps with starcraft 2 with a 660m. (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/digital-storm-x17-r...)
Do you even read what the OP writes?

He can get a laptop with a 7970m (but with an amd a 10 processor not intel i7) for about 900 pounds http://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-msi-gx60-1ac-024uk-i...

Would recommend an intel processor though.

If he can manage to find a laptop with a 675mx that about equivalent to a 560 ti, a 670mx is about 10-20% better than a 7770.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benc... (the rankings are out of order, look at the heaven and 3d mark 11 benches)

Brett, stop telling people the wrong thing about laptops, he wants to play dota 2 and starcraft. Dota 2 has a recommended system requirement of a nvidia 7600 or x1600. I think he does not need a 2400 pound laptop to play that game. I can't believe you run a computer store.

Scroll down to dota 2 http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1583/pg9/amd-a10-...

The hd 4000 gets an average of 30 fps at 1080p with med high settings.

OP: Anything play dota 2 pretty well (integrated graphics)--An i5 with no dgpu will have no problem getting medium at 1080p.
Starcraft is more demanding and will require a dgpu for ultra settings.

You guys are not helping him. The elitism of desktop users can be annoying. Most people using a laptop realize they are using a laptop and are fine with 720p at med settings at 30 fps. They, when they say playable do not mean 1080p at ultra with 4x AA at 60 fps.

Ahh, Thx man, thats the post ive been looking for, to Brett, i realize that a desktop will outperform a laptop, as i have built several myself, what i wanted was a lappie that i could bring to LANs and such, as my gaming tower is a bit to big to bring to a friend,

About the MSI, will the AMD underperform, compared to any I5, or I7?

Also, i had no idea DOTA was so easy to run? man, i just got my new 680s so that i could play dota on ultra....what a waste, should have done my research, well well

Cheers,

Im also in the market for a desktop replacement, im looking for the same price range too. Ive been looking at the Asus G75 series, you can get them pretty cheap for the spec but Im having major problems finding the correct model in the UK. Not sure if anywhere in the US will ship it over either. Every time i find a great laptop I cant get it in the UK
December 18, 2012 10:31:08 AM

OMG, this is what ive been looking for like.... ever.

cheers

The 670m is quite powerful. If you can try to get the 670mx (based on the kepler architecture) as it is more powerful. The 660m is about 10-15 % slower but uses much less power.
December 18, 2012 10:36:59 AM

Ok, ive been looking at the benchmarks,
altough, what is the difference between kepler and the other one?
December 18, 2012 10:41:35 AM

dont go for an AMD GPU due to the Endro issues. Theres an article on the home page about the current Clevo/AMD issues.

I would go for an i7 3630QM, 670m (i would stretch for a 680m tbh), 4gb of ram and a 500gb HDD. At a later date you can switch to a SSD and add more ram. Keeps the budget down.

December 18, 2012 10:42:15 AM

Oh and www.scan.co.uk do the same laptops under their 3xs brand. They offer a better finance deal as well....
