service packs and networks

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional on a workstation. It worked fine before I put all the Service Packs on. But now, when it isn't connected to a network I cannot access 'My computer' or any file-selection dialogs in programs. Shortcuts on the desktop work fine, as does file access through the command prompt. Plugged into a network it's just fine, but this machine isn't always near a network point. I can't get at the network setup stuff normally, and disabling LAN and network setting stuff through Safe Mode doesn't seem to help. Any ideas what I could try? Microsoft's knowledge base and this website's archive don't seem to have anything.

Thanks if you can help

you said so much, but it is difficuld to understand what exactly is going on. all that understandable is that you have trouble with w2k machine seing network after SP??? installation. could you say exactly what you do and what is not doing well?

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...
