Irratic "Blank" DVD

For some reason, 1 of my DVD's has become, erm.. strange. There are files on
it, but Windows (XPHome SPII, automatic updates) states it's empty. All the
other DVD's work fine. This was one of the first DVD's I burned on this
machine, round about the time SPII came out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I do not have access to another DVD drive/player or PC.

Copy the DVD to a new DVD - toss the old one.

erm... Windows reads it as a blank... I don't know how to make a copy of that.

What is the burning software you are using to format the DVD? XP can't burn a
DVD+/-RW without a 3rd party burning app. What's the name of the recorder,
it's drive string and firmware version?

Just because Windows sees it like that does not mean your CD/DVD burning
apps will. They can do a duplicate when Windows may not even know somehting
is there - depending on the application in question. I've copied many a
Macintosh CD this way.

Otherwise - find a friend with a burner and 45 minutes willing to let you
use it for a meal or something. It is possible the DVD itself has become
damaged.

For some crazy reason, right after running Nero InfoTool, the disk works. I
don't understand what is going on. I will make a back-up as soon as I can lay
my hands on a blank DVD. That may not be for a couple of days and my HD is
full. Hope windows will just keep recognizing it untill then. Still, here is
the whole report.

Any idea why the disk may be functioning again? There's a problem with the
ASPI btw. Any ideas on that?

frustrating for even the experienced.

You might update Nero to ver 6.6

Reinstall your aspi drivers, if you indeed do have a SCSI device in your
system? I don't have a SCSI device, my secondary IDE channel is used for the
recorder as master and the DVD-ROM as slave, the primary IDE channel for my
HD's master and slave.
So, my system aspi is reported as not installed by the info tool, though
nero aspi is loaded if needed.

Thought I would add, If you update your firmware make sure you use the OEM's
web site for your device(s) there are some hacked firmware updates out there
on the internet. I had to do a live tech chat to get mine, and when I
searched it (the OEM's update) on the web found nothing similar. If you use a
hacked update you could damage your device and void any OEM warranty.

I have heard of the above causing some problems for people and removal
solved the problems.

I also see you are not taking advantage of Nero's INCD app get the new ver
when you update, try it you might like it..

Thanks for the sheparding and good care. It's appreciated. As to my location
- come on, with a little creativity you'll identify the language of the the
drivers for yourself. ;) Judging by your last post, possibly you already
have. :)

Tried updating the ASPI already, but neroinfo still identifies it as a
corrupted installation. Will look into the article you mentioned on ASPI and
see if I can't fix it.
Will be careful to get my drivers from the OEMs. Regarding wether the drive
is SCSI or IDE, I must confess, I only take intrest in technical matters when
they hit me on the head. Haven't really looked into it, so far.

As to the the settings, haven't been able to nail down the issue so far. It
definitely something is in the shutdown cycle, but what? As I'm sure you
know, tight security takes a while on boot up, so trying to figure out what
is causing the issue by continously rebooting and adding/subtracting services
and start-ups is pretty time consuming. Not only that, but shutting down some
of the soft gets to be tricky, because of the various services they install
and depend on. Not all their services may be stopped by selecting "do not run
on xp start up."
Isn't there a tool out there that can tell me what is causing the problem?

Before or after the firmware update? Did you update Nero? Grab Nero's Incd
and install? If you don't have a SCSI drive the aspi drivers are basically
irrelevant, it would help to know the age and make/model of your computer.
