Just put together a new machine and am using an MSI StarForce 815 card (GeForce2 GTS 32MB). Prob. is that I have no res. selection above 1280x1024. This card is supposed to support 2048x1536 - any idea what the solution might be?

2048x1536 is the max res support by the GF2MX, not the card.
Plus, i notice that sometimes the OS matters too. WHen my radeon was in WinME. The res only goes up to 1600x1200.
But now in Win2000, it goes up to 2048x1536. So it can be OS limiting the res, or the card is limiting it.
But, if u set the res up to 2048x1536, the task bar and all the icons will shrink so bad that u can barely see it. U will need aleast a 22" monitor to make it useful.

Running Win2K SP1.

Here's what MSI says about this card:

Supports Super High-Resolution Graphics Modes
-640x480 8/16/32 bit colors with 240Hz
-800x600 8/16/32 bit colors with 240Hz
-1024x768 8/16/32 bit colors with 200Hz
-1152x864 8/16/32 bit colors with 150Hz
-1280x1024 8/16/32 bit colors with 120Hz
-1600x1200 8/16/32 bit colors with 85 Hz
-1920x1200 8/16/32 bit colors with 75Hz
-2048x1536 8/16 bit color with 75Hz

Finally, I don't want to run my desktop at 2048, but I would like to run my games at 1600, and that is not selectable.

and there is no chance that the monitor is a limiter? no offence but if you wanted to run a higher resolution you would have to spend a tiny bit more money and get a good monitor that supports it, as well as a graphics card better than the mx...

my near year old gf2 gts is running beautifully right now nearly always at 2048x1536 on a sweet 22 inch monitor but the problem is always the same funds

where did all my money go, ahh... [-peep-], forgot that i lived in london

Monitor supports 1600x1200... and that's all I want.

The MSI software correctly indicates that the monitor's max. resolution is 1600x1200.

my sony monitor suports 1600x1200 . but in win 98se if i install my monitor I can only choose up to 1280x1024. my solution was to delete or remove my monitor and let windows install default monitor. now i have all available settings.

I aint signing nothing!!!

Try to reinstall the drivers. First remove the old ones and install standard VGA adapter. No offense im just makeing sure you did this. Once you restarted with the standard VGA installed then reinstall the Nvidia drivers, not the MSI drivers. I use 6.50. If this doesn't work let me know, since I have a MS-8820 (the 815 pro) on order right now.

I can't find drivers for my Tektronix 1536.

I can get up to 1600x1400 on my desktop by using the 6.3.1 drivers that came with the card. Anything else and you can forget it. Also, even with these drivers I still can't get the high res. modes under game options (such as Rogue Spear) - which I CAN do on my older PC running win98 with a Matrox G400MAX.

Its all up to the monitor and your drivers. Plain and simple. If you had a 17 inch monitor you would be lucky to get higher than 1280x1024.
SOME 17 inch monitors can do 1600x1200 and I think all 19 inch monitors can do max 1600x1200. you need a very expensive monitor to get anything higher than 1600x1200, probably a 22 inch or higher.
Also reference drivers can be a pain if you want to be able to use special features of your video card like Video out.
