Ok, so I bought a HP Pavilion from a friend 4 years ago after he had it for 2-3 years. It worked perfectly for a year and then the video to the screen started cutting in and out and would only work sporadically. I hooked it to a monitor and it worked fine for about 2 years and then it became extremely unstable. (BSOD's, inability to load windows with VGA drivers installed, unable to play games or anything demanding outside of watching a movie or surfing the web.)
Last night I noticed a burnt plastic smell emanating from the laptop so I turned it off and unplugged it. I tried turning it on this morning and it will not show anything outside of the POST screen. If I try to load windows, try to get into BIOS the screen is just black. My HD still spins and I've tried taking out battery and discharging the caps but it still won't display anything outside of the startup screen.
So my question is, could this be caused by the VPU problem that has plagued these laptops, including mine? Or could it be as simple as a bad BIOS battery?
