What purpose is served by the numerous files in this
directory(C:\Windows\Installer\*.*) ? These files take up an lot of space.
Would it be safe to remove these or at least backup them up and store them?

This is just my advice. ;-)

WINDOWS Installer folder

To avoid all kinds of errors with applications such as MS Office, leave the
C:\WINDOWS\Installer folder alone.

%systemroot%\Installer

Hi: Thanks for your response, but I feel as if I just had my hand spanked
("Don't touch that") :)).

While I appreciate what you are trying to tell me about the probable
problems that compressing those "installer files" might cause, I guess I was
looking for more or less technical advice with respect to what CAN be done to
eliminate the space these files take up. Looking in the property pages, some
of them are no longer being accessed. So...

I didn't mean to slap your hand.

Some of the Installer files can be deleted and some can be compressed.

I can't tell you first hand because I do not know what's on your machine.
Compressing some of them may cause a slow down on the machine and it may
not. By that I mean that if you have any MS Office applications and you go
to add or remove an Office component, if those particular files were
compressed, they could bog down your machine at that time.

I have deleted some that I know that I don't need.

And I just now deleted 101fc8.msi, Adobe Reader 6.0.

Thank you for having me go back into C:\WINDOWS\Installer to take another
look.

I just compressed all the non-Office files and folders.

Now that there is what I'm talking about... :) ! Thank you so very much.
With that kind of assistance, I can take it from here.

But I need to do more disk cleaning (the application just doesn't cover
enough ground). Can you direct me to a source where I can get more indepth
disk cleaning information (such as, what files are residue, or can be safely
backed up and eliminated)?
