Have you tried condoms?

Re-install.

If you think I'm being a pervert with that joke... ...Microsoft started it with their WinXP advert.

Have you changed or added any hardware or loaded any new drivers or other software lately? Or did it just seemingly appear from nowhere?

Lately? I just got my new hard drive yesterday. I installed windows 98se, did all the upgrades, etc. then i installed the latest nvidia drivers, via 4in1, promise ata100 controller drivers, winamp, winzip, and i had just installed norton antivirus, (in fact it was the restart from installing the program when this all started).

and when it loads in safe mode i can't use the mouse. :frown:

Did you try uninstalling Norton Antivirus to see if it made any difference? I've seen it cause problems on certain machines, so it's a possibility.

looks like a reformat and start again - this time don't install norton. I have heard of probs between ati G/cards, AMD chips and win 95 causing protection errors - could be summat to do with this. Ie - Graphics card, chip and OS.

I rolled a silk reefer plant, lit it and now I have no body hair from the neck up!

Sorry should have mentioned there was a patch to fix that prob - have a look on MS site see if any known probs exist.

yes I've redone it all. Good thing I wasn't very far before.

What other virus protection software do you think I should get?

One brand new review I just read said that the Panda Antivirus is the best. It was in a magazine I just bought, so I'll have to search through to find it.

Ok thanks. BUt I just recently discovered it wasn't norton that caused the problem...

I was reinstalling the PRomise ATA100 drivers, and restarted and BOOM!!!! Windows PRotection Error!! i thought OH [-peep-] so i went in safe mode and got rid of them and it works now.

What happened was i installed the drivers without restarting, then installed norton and restarted and thus caused the problem making me think it was norton. HAHA!

but it seems funny that the PRomise ATA100 drivers would cause that....... what controller drivers do i use now?!?! Should I try an older versino of the promise drivers?

I found with some drivers I had to restart without doing anything else otherwise there is trouble and have to do it all over again.

Well I tried an older version and it still happens. Oh well. 26000 score on Sisoft sandra drive benchmark is good enough for me.
