new CPU, old software?

I just built a system on a KT7 mobo, Duron 750Mhz CPU, 256K RAM. I cannot get some of my old software to load, much less run. I didn't expect this. Anything to do besides upgrade, upgrade, upgrade? This is especially true of games, particularly some just given me originally designed to run under Win3.1 (what's that???)...
