I recently installed Windows XP Pro upgrade on my Compaq Presario 5034
(previously had Windows 98). Since then my Comcast internet connection
apparently “times out after a period of time. After a restart the connection
is fine then it goes away. It says “cannot display this page and “server not
found. I have checked my connection and the computer says my modem (Motorola
Surfboard SB5100) is working properly. I have put my IP address and gateway
and DSN numbers in manual mode. I have removed the firewall. I have turned
off the modem then restarted it. I have had the computer check the drivers
and they are current/latest. I have disabled the “turn off display and
“turn off hard drive features. I have not added time for recognizing address
in the msconfig file since it does work when computer first starts.
I have now uninstalled XP. The Windows 98 worked fine. Then I upgraded to
Windows 98 SE. When I did that I could not get any connection to the
internet, nor could I find a way to change the IP or any other address. I
dis-connected/down powered the modem, installed new hardware, installed
drivers, ran the install CD. I tried the comcast CD but it did not list my
connection. Again the computer said the modem was working fine. I uninstalled
SE and now internet access is fine.
What do I need to do when I upgrade to maintain internet use?
