Hey:
I ran Windows Update and there was a new audio driver. I downloaded and
installed it but the audio didn't work. I attempted to Rollback the
driver but it reported that there was no backup driver saved. I dug out
my restore disk from the manuafacturer and installed the old driver. I
still don't get any audio. If I open the Device Manager it reports that
the drivers are operating normally. When I open the Properties dialog
for the individual components though it says the driver is installed but
not started. If I try to open the Volume Control I get a dialog that
complains that there is no mixer installed.
I have completely uninstalled the hardware and re-installed with the
same results.
I had the same issue and fixed it. Here's how; I went to my computer mfgr (dell) website where they identified my driver. I downloaded the driver. While installing, it asked me if I wanted to overwrite the old file. I clicked "yes". I still had no sound after the install was complete. The wizard did not say that a restart was required, but it was. Once I restarted, everything worked fine. Hope this works for you also.
Good luck,
Gary S
