You're working against the standard defaults. XP is optimized for 1024x768
and at least 16 bit color. It will settle in at 800x600 but minimum of 16
bit color remains. Monitor needs to be svga not vga (a minimum system
requirement of XP).

Are hardware specific display drivers installed yet?

You can select other settings by using Display properties> Settings>
Advanced> Adapter: Click the List All Modes button. Select a mode supported
by the monitor (and display adapter). 256 colors will be listed if
supported by the display adapter.

Not sure how you're going to get there with a garbled screen though. Maybe
Start> Run> MSCONFIG which offers a /basevideo switch on the boot.ini tab.
If you can get there, select it and restart the computer in normal mode.

Sounds as if the drivers for display did NOT install properly.
