Hello,

What kind of a GeForce2 (or other) graphics card would you recommend?

I'm on a 'tight' budget so it shouldn't be very expensive. I would want a somewhat 'decent' graphics card that wouldn't require me to upgrade for a year or two.
(I'm no game-freak so I don't require 100+ fps at 1024x768)

The specs for the new computer I'm going to buy are:

800MHz Duron
256MB RAM(133 MHz)
17" Monitor
40(/60)GB HD ATA66/100
Abit KT7A mobo

I would use the computer mainly for office work and programming (not 3D), but also for games. I was considering a GeForce2 MX.

Another question, should I get a card with TV-Out because I am also considering buying a DVD-ROM, what would the quality of the output be (from graphics card to TV)?

Feel free to recommend changes to the specifications of the computer I'm going to buy.

Thanks in advance.

What type of hard drive are you planing on getting?

For graphics you should read through Tom's Hardware guild on graphics cards (if you havent yet)

if you want to get a GF2 on a budget the MX and GTS seem to be good and outside of the Geforce family there are the Kyro 2 cards

What kind of tight budget are you on?

If your even considering a tv out option for DVD's then dont settle for anything less than a Radeon. It will handle games nicely plus give you the best image quality. TV out Radeons can be bought anywhere from $80 to $150. If you go for the cheaper $80 RadeonLE make sure it has the TV out, not all of them do.

If you take a truth and follow it blindly, it will become a Falsehood and you a Fanatic.

If I was you I would get the radeon LE (with tv out if needed) and flash the bios to a bog standard radeon 32ddr,more performance for less scooby snacks.

if your looking for Dvd or editing feature it has to be an ATI card. No doubts about it!

The hard drive would be a 40/60 GB IDE ATA66/100. The budget for the whole system is approx. $1000.

(Since I live outside the US and the UK the prices are probably higher here, you'd probably get more for the $1000 in the US.)

go geforce2 gts. if the quality is as bad as the radeon people say it is, those hardcore gamers wouldn't be reading any text at all.

:)
I can see with no flaws any DVD with a TNT-1

man if you have a good cpu you will not need any motion compensation (kyro 2 have it)..

if your looking for a geforce card get a geforce 2 mx i have it and i get great framerates (about 45-50fps on mechwarrior 4 on low detail with my pentium 2 350mhz with 96mb ram and it even works good on high detail!) and its a very good card for overclocking (id suggest getting a prophet 2 mx it is very good for overclocking) and get nvidia's detonator 3 drivers

never fear, the bdtman is here!

If you are looking at DVD ROM I would get a Radeon. A good DVD player is the Creative Encore Series; the new Dxr3 decoders are out, which in turn has allowed the DXR2 packaged cards to be much cheaper. The Dxr2 card has digital output. I just installed mine and it works great.

If it works for you then don't fix it.

Get the Leadtek Winfast Ge2 GTS. Much better performance than a Ge2 MX considering it has twice the memory bandwidth, very overclockable, and it has tv out(it is optional). I own one, and it was a great package deal.. tv out works perfectly too.

You might want to consider the GeForce2 Pro. Considering what you're going to use it for, that should keep you in good shape for at least couple of years. It also has TV out.
