Hi, I have a problem with my computer. As I’m using it for a period of time, my monitor just blanks out and the computer seems like its going to reset but it just quite doesn’t. The cd-rom and burner lights blink and the hard drive just stops working. I am unable to shut the computer down so I always have to turn off the power on the power supply. The funny thing is that if I don’t do it soon enough, the next time I try to turn on the computer there’s no information being sent to the monitor and the computer is totally inactive. Only the fan for the CPU and power supply seems to work. Also my motherboard has 4 LED’s that blink red, yellow or green. When this problem happens all 4 LED’s turn red. My motherboard is a microstar, socket A board for an Athalon. Sorry for being real vague for the description of the motherboard but I just can’t remember what model number it was. The funny thing about this problem is that I have to remove every single piece of hardware from the motherboard and stuff everything back in to get the computer to run regularly again. Again, this only happens if I don’t turn off the computer in time when the screen goes blank.

I’ve been told that this was caused by a virus but I’m not sure if it’s correct. The person that I asked about this problem told me that the virus deletes system files. The funny thing is, is that this problem only started after a year since I bought my computer and so far its been doing this “thing” frequently and unexpectedly. Please can anyone tell me if this is a hardware or software problem? Thank You All

P.S. My monitor seems to flicker at times, I only noticed this until now does this have to do anything with the thing I mentioned above, and sorry about the spelling and grammer errors. Oh!, and here are my specs.

Athalon 650
128M SDRam pc-100
tnt2-m64 32M Ram
4x LG Burner
48x Samsung cd-rom drive
10gb 5400 rpm hard drive
GVC 56k modem
Sound Blaster PCI 128 (I think it’s Ensonique, I’m not sure)

Four red leds on an msi board is an indication of a processor or motherboard problem.

When I go into a computer store I lose all means of reason for some reason.

Perhaps a failing power supply?

If I were you I would take apart the computer and clean out the dust bunnies and reseat all the power connectors, memory module(s), video card, modem, soundcard, and IDE cables.
Then I would reinstall all the drivers for the motherboard, video card, modem, and soundcard.
If that doesn't work then a Windows .dll file may be corrupted by a recent program installation or update. I doubt your problem was caused by a virus. Then I would reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows and everything else.
Worst case your hard drive may be going bad.

Have you run the Windows Maintenance Wizard?
Sometimes it can fix problems like the one you're experiencing.

Some good advice was given in this thread. I basically repeated what everyone posted here.

hey thanks guys, I really appreciate your help here. But I have a few questions. Since I really don't know how to play around with the motherboard very much, how would I reset all the power connectors, memory module(s), video card, modem, soundcard, and IDE cables?

Take them out, and plug them back in.
