Sorry folks - I found the magic button that restored my keyboard back to
normal typing.

I believe it would be NumLock. Laptops usually combine the number pad with
the letter keys, so 1=j, 2=k, 3=l, 4=u, 5=i, 6=o while 7, 8 and 9 are the
same in either mode.
