Hi all!!

I just got back home for the summer and started working today. Being the computer freak that I am, I have already started to spend the summer money that I do not have yet. I want to buy a Hercules 3d Prophet 2 Ultra, but it's only $20 buck cheaper than the GF3. (prices taken from pricewatch.com) What's the deal? Will the prices drop? Or should I just buy the GF3?

peace out

That is odd. I just looked myself.

Just go for a Elsa or Leadtek card. They are good companies that make some good boards. Plus you can get them for arount 100 cheaper than those Hercules cards.

Blah, Blah Blahh, Blahh, blahh blah blahh, blah blah.

Two things petty. Do you mean GF2 or 3? And I heard the the herc boards were great for overclocking.

thanks a lot

GF2Ultra would have very little headroom to OC, and because its cranked way up already it probably would cut the life somewhat if you did. GF3 will OC better but won't have the throughput of an ultra - though so close you won't notice the diff. Ultra's normally come with extra's (espec Herc boards) that aren't on other cards - eg: OC wares/software(DVD)
I have an LT Ultra but OCing (stable) didn't make for a noticeable difference in games I play (Q3, CS, etc) but haven't benchmarked it either.... Herc's have superior looking cooling - but is that because it's neccessary to achieve their clockspeed? Other boards might OC better if they have little cooling because you could add H/Sinks.
Haven't tried this on mine yet because it was actually stable.

Conclusion: if not planning to OC ultra would be faster - this traded off against the GF3's extra graphics effects - which I haven't seen & probably won't until games for it emerge.
OC option - similar display result in my opinion (but GF3 will stay current for a little longer - hence my pick.)

BTW anyone know of a site that does GraphicCard orders to outside US (ie:Australia)
couldn't find one on pricewatch but not surprising - DownUnder's not exactly a mega market for these things..

Thanks a meg

If you would even consider paying 300+ for a card then take the GeForce3.

I was speaking of the Geforce2 Ultra cards from Elsa and Leadtek. I think they are about 275 now.

You can get a GF3 for $340 now with 3.8ns ram.

Now that i know that the Elsa and Leadtek cards are cheaper, which one is better? Or should i just keep my Radeon 64mb?

If the Radeon 64 is doing what you want then keep it, if not sell it on Ebay and buy a GF3 or wait until the Radeon2 comes out later this year. Sharkey Extreme indicates that information about the Radeon2 will be forthcoming in a couple of weeks. You might want to wait until then to see if maybe the Radeon2 would be the ticket. The prices on GF3's are much more resonable now and the IQ (image quality) is also outstanding. I can't see buying a GF2 Ultra when the GF3's are within $100 and coming down. Good news is the lower the price of the GF3 the lower the Radeon2 price will be. ATI usually prices there product the same as the competition initially and adds more features or prices the product less with same number of features. I am not sure what nvidia has in the makings for the rest of this year. I expect a GF3 MX version I really don't see an Ultra version since DDR Ram used with the GF3 is pretty much at its peak speed. GF3 core may get an enhancement to support DX8.1 N-Patches and a second vertex shader could be added as well like on the XBox. I think ATI has some wonderful surprises for us shortly.
