Im looking to upgrade my video card from 3DFX Voodoo3 3000 on a PIII 550 and have thought about a Geforce 3. I have heard from this site that processors are now playing little part in games performance so would my machine be able to drive this card at a reasonable speed or would I be better off with something else? Thanx for help. My system spec in full:
PIII 550 Katmai
192MB PC100
Abit BE6-II 440BX Motherboard
8GB Seagate HDD
Aureal Vortex II
Blah, blah, blah...

More about : geforce3 piii 550 katmai

geforce 3 really isnt worth it, the games that will take advantage of the card will not come too near in the future and considering the cpu speed requirements of current games (400mhz some a bit more) the cpu will be significant as it wont be the graphics which will be restricting the performance but the cpu wont be able to keep up... anyway go for a cpu upgrade and a graphics card upgrade if you can afford it...

Well, I def need a decent video card at the moment. Not sure which to go for-what is obvious is that this voodoo3 is not up2the task, especially as it doesnt have any decent win2k drivers! What card would you recommend? Was looking at Kyro II or Geforce 2GTS. U people who live in the states are so lucky hardware wise. U moan about high prices, but a Geforce3 here is £300, or $430 and a Kyro II is £120 or almost $200.

I disagree with killall. I think if you can afford to get the GF3 without hurting your wallet too much, get the card. The performance in all the current games will be excelent with all the features turned on maximum. Also, there are quite a few GF3 titles coming out in the near future.

If you get one of the other cards, you will have to upgrade before you would with a GF3. Also, when more physics intensive games are released, just upgrade you cpu (+ mobo, ram etc.).

If you can afford it, buy it. You'll be glad you did.

what are you chatting about i live in the uk i paid £200 for my gf2 thats over $300 so... now its up to £250 which i think is a joke thanks to the ddr prices and high speed shortages... but still it is the hercules card and its amazing so i dont mind too much...

Anyone know of any US based company(s) that do orders overseas?
Got some DDR from crucial and that worked out 1/2 price of local distributor :)
Like the UK (and most other areas) I have the problem of cards being waaaayyy over priced in comparison to US. :(
You'd be very lucky to find a GF3 Card under AU$950 (=$475) [even a LT or Elsa]
So even with shipping etc. I could land one in Australia for AU$750 (=$340 + $35) - save even more If I could buy an GF2ultra for ~$250 :)  (same price as GF3 here)

Thanx
