Gateway is now selling Celeron 800 notebooks with 128MB RAM and Windows XP! For get the $999 price, how the Sam Hill is the stupid thing supposed to run programs? Loading XP on my PIII 933 with 256MB RAM made it slow down by 20%! And that was MOSTLY do to the ENORMOUS RAM requirements of XP (256MB minimum!). That thing will run about as fast as a Pentium 166MMX laptop does with Windows 95/64MB!
I'm running it on my old P2-400 with 128 MB of memory and it's noticably faster. The min req is 64 MB. 128 MB is recommended though. Obviously some people will need 256 MB though.
The CPU requirement is 233 I believe, but 350 MHz is recommended.
I haven't used XP enough to see it hog anything, but I don't think it will be as bad as you say.
I ran it on the system listed and saw a 20% performance reduction in 3D-Mark 2000 and 2001. I consider these programs perfectly good indicators of game performance. I use 98SE. Oh, and there are no drivers available for several of my most important cards for any NT version.
I got it from Microsoft directly, but getting it in other ways is really not that hard. mIRC is probably the easiest way to find a copy if you have broadband.
