I have one box out of several that will not resolve host names by name, only
by ip address. If I use a command window with ping, or use a browser I
cannot hit any sites by name such as www.yahoo.com. If I enter the ip
address for yahoo.com then I can ping it or bring it up in IE. This is
consistent with all host names.
I looked at the hosts file, there's nothing in it except a couple host names
and ip addresses I added for testing. Those host names will resolve.
I have tried automatic ip address and dns like all my other computers on
this network.
I have tried static ip address and manually configured dns servers.
I have turned off the firewall on this box to ensure it is not interfering
in some way.
I can't find any reason why only this one box (WinXP Pro) will not resolve
host names. Any ideas from anyone would be very appreciated.

I just discovered the problem. I didn't know Norton Internet Security was
installed on this box. I disabled it and now name resolution works again.
So, there must be some setting in Norton Internet Security that was causing
the problem. I will look into that now.
