Pete,

You've got 4 separate threads in this newsgroup alone about the same
problem. It's best to use just one thread so those that want to help don't
have to sift through all of them.

Right click on the taskbar.
Make sure there is NOT a check mark next to "Lock the Taskbar".
Move your mouse over the top border of the task bar until vertical arrows
appears (like resizing an IE window).
Once you see the vertical arrows, left click (and hold the mouse button
down) over the top border, then drag the mouse and top border down to the
size you want and release the mouse button.
If this doesn't work, restart in Safe Mode and try it.

Let us know.

Pete,

I Googled for your problem and came up with some posts that might work.

I had exactly the same problem and was driving me nuts for days......trying
to remember how fixed it......all I know is I kept at it trying
everything...with taskbar options......not sure but think I UNLOCKED the
taskbar......Disabled "Show quick launch"........then could drag it back to
normal single size........and locked the toolbar again........Right click
the taskbar then Properties to do this.......as I said trying to remember
what I did................if anything else comes to mind will post.

Never give up!
Try this. Instead of resizing the Taskbar by grabbing the double-arrow
"gripper bar" on the top of the Taskbar, place your mouse over the divider
(the vertical slider) between your Toolbars, e.g between the QuickLaunch
toolbar and the rest of your Taskbar. Grab the double-arrow "gripper", but
instead of moving it left or right as you normally would to make it wider or
narrower, drag it up or down, or up and to the right, i.e. drag it
vertically, not horizontally.

It would appear that both Bazcaz and Claymore had the solution to the
problem because their methods while starting from different points, ended up
with the same result. I actually tried the trick of dragging the divider
upwards first and the net result was that it dragged the Quick Launch Bar up
off the Taskbar and left me with still the double layer. There were two
dividers visible on the left so I dragged one right over to the right and
Voila! - a single layer Taskbar.

I then closed the now isolated Quick Launch Bar and then went in to
Properties and set it up again. It returned to its rightful place without
doubling up the bar and I rapidly locked the Taskbar.

All seems to be normal now except that the ?icons of the runnings programs
on the Taskbar are very truncated but I can always identify them via the
balloon tip which appears when I hover the cursor over the icon.

Thank you for your continued interest. Next time more of us will know what
to do!
