I recently installed a Maxtor plus II 250gb hard drive as a second drive and
I cannot see or access this drive. It is not in the "My Computer" window. In
the device manager in the controller properties window the device status is
working properly. The device usage line is empty. How do I access this drive?

You need to format the drive first, you should have the SATA drivers from
the board mfg on a floppy,if not download them from mfg. Also download
power max from maxtor, install to floppy, boot to maxtors power max,do a
limited format,and/or burn,when thru,shutdown computer.Start computer,
boot to xp cd,press F6,install drivers from floppy, after, proceed to recovery,
press enter key for password,then type:DiskPart In DiskPart,create a
partition
on SATA drive,then press Esc key,then type:FORMAT D: /FS:ntfs D: being
SATA,once its thru type:EXIT Let xp start.SATA requires a little more work
than IDE drives....

As this is a secondary drive you don't need to do any of that.

Right click "My computer, Manage, choose Disk Management *or* click Start>
Run and enter diskmgmt.msc.

In Disk Management, right click the new drive, initialize, partition (at
this point you can create a primary partition, extended partitions and
additional logical drives if you want to divide the drive into more than one
large partition) and format.
