i usually keep the write cache policies for my Maxtor 200 GB external
firewire drives set optimized for fast removal. For some reason, the policies
have been changedand are no longer available (grayed out), with the "Optimize
for performamnce" choice selected. Now the "Enable write caching on the
disk" option is checked and can be unchecked. While I'm not sure how things
changed, I can't figure out how to get the ability to control my write
caching choices again. Any information would be very helpful. Thanks

I would look in the BIOS setup controls.

bios setup access keys. Go to: http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
