Icons briefly Disappear when clicking icon

Out of the blue, when I click on some of the icons on my desktop it will
cause my desktop to go blank except for the background wallpaper. Then when
the icons come back I get the whit background asking me if I want to restore
my active deskop.
It has been happening when I click on the My Documents, Network Places, and
a few others. I have recreated the icons but the problem remains. However
this problem does not happen when I use Windows Explorer to access those
folders.
Any Ideas?
