Problem:USB Device not recognised

I have two computers both have onboard USB 1.1 ports and a USB2 5 port card
by safecom ali drives the other has the same setup but the onboard USB is
physically broken! both OSs are XPpro SP2.

I have a Samsung Yepp 512 mb MP3 player it works on both the onboard usbs
(until one was broken!) I added the usb cards and they work fine with Memory
sticks web cams... but not the MP3 player! it doesn't need any drivers as if
I plug it into the usb1.1 port it works fine and it had never been on this
pc before! the usb ports work OK so either the device is not working with
usb2, the spec states it is usb 2 and when plugged in to a USB1 port it
tells you it would work quicker in a USB2 port!!

So what the issue!?

Can I add it manual in the reg ?

any ideas?

from the reg.

You might try a different cable, or connect directly instead of using an
extension cable (like some that go from the back of the case to the
front). I have seen this sort of thing when the cable was bad - or too
long, especially with USB 2.0, even when the cable works for a USB 1.1
device.

If the player is powered through the USB, the ports may not supply enough
current, especially if the player has rechargeable batteries that are
recharged via the USB - it may help to charge the batteries fully before
trying it (maybe use the USB 1.1 port to charge it up - the USB 1.1 ports
may provide more current).

Some USB cards that have 4 or 5 ports seem to have a built-in hub to
supply that many ports, and sometimes there are one or two ports that
will supply more current than the others (that are connected via the
hub), so you should try all the ports on the card.

I suspected that it might be a hardware-related problem.
I have had good results with NEC USB chipsets, and not so good with ALI
or VIA.
