Hi,
another question ( i have a thirst for knowledge ......
Another project i am looking at, involves a housing estate. The property to
be considered as the base station is at the top of a hill, and all of the
other properties have good clear line of sight to this building. I would be
thinking of connecting between 50 - 200 houses to this base station.
Could anyone suggest a suitable configuration of equipment.
Would i need a simple antenna with amp (power?) at the base station, and all
the houses could use standard wifi cards ?, would they need external antenna
? directional ?would they need amplifier ?#
any input on types of antenna, amplifiers, etc would also be useful.
i am new to all this, all i have really used are linksys ap and cards.

Looks like by definition you will need omni-directional antenna at the
central location and directional antennas at the remote locations. Not
every card has a socket for the antenna cable, and not every computer is
going to be conveniently located near the window facing the central
station, so you may have to use access points in some houses. Also, 200
devices seems a little too crowded for a single network.

Are the other properties all round the base station , or downhill of it?

Look at the Motorola Canopy system for a network that large.

Proxim also makes a good product for this situation. The MP.11A radios
are 802.11A multipoint, have bandwidth limiting built into each
device, small device with good performance but can be a pain to setup
for the inexperienced. US price is under $1,000 for a base station
unit and under $600 for a subscriber unit, antennas extra of course.
BTW the bandwidth limiting is in the unit and not over the air so
there is no performance hit to other users.
