I have installed a 3Com ADSL wireless Router, no problem, all works fine
with LAN cable attached to primary desktop. Then I come to install the card
and set up my laptop to connect in. I had this connected in previously to an
ad-hoc connection with a 11g PCI card in the desktop and the inbuilt 11Mbps
integrated card in my laptop, using XP's ICS. I found I needed to set IP
addresses manually for this, and it worked fine.
But all of that is no more!
Now the laptop connects in fine when it is cable connected, using Network
Bridge and the LAN adapter bridged to it. It finds its IP address from the
DHCP in the router and all is well. But then disconnect the LAN cable, and
disable the adapter, put in the 3Com card, and after a while the Network
Bridge comes up with some strange IP address which guaratees its not going
to connect. I check the settings of the Network Bridge, and the 3Com card,
all looks compatible, usuing automatic IP address assignment etc., same
SSID, noencryption (switched it off in case this was stopping connection),
so I do a repair on the Network Bridge - and it loses IP addresses
altogether, all set to 0.0.0.0 !!!
Now I don't know whether this is the 3Com card not working properly, or the
Network Bridge software getting screwed up. Rebooting the laptop doesn't
affect anything, as I thought at one stage maybe some settings didn't "take"
until a reboot. I have also tried removing the 3Com card from the Network
Bridge, disabling the Network Bridge, and rebooting, but again the 3Com card
doesn't get a DHCP supplied address.
Any and All ideas very welcome, either posted here, or directly to me.
Thanks to any helper, in advance.
Regards
Chris

Why are you using a Network Bridge?

Ron Bandes, CCNP, CTT+, etc.

I am using a network bridge because thats the way the PC was initially set
up, with a network bridge which had the IP number, and linked to it an
ethernet adapter, a wireless adapter, and a firewire adapter.
I have detached the 3Com wireless from the bridge, but it makes no
difference, I still can't get through to the internet and teh 3Com card
doesn't get a DHCP supplied address.

Chris

OK everyone and anyone...who feels stupid? Except that I feel rather
mystified.

I deleted the Network Bridge; reran the Network Wizard to re-establish the
LAN (between the PCs) with only the 3Com adapter selected as the link, and
with the internet on a gateway. And even without booting, all of a sudden
the 3Com network card gained its IPa ddress from the router, and all was,
and still is, very well indeed.

So why didin't it work with the network bridge? surely one can connect a
bridge to a router - well I know you can...but hey anyway one of lifes, or
rather XP's, little surprises.
