The_keyboard_on_my_Inspiron_only_works_in_dos._The_space_bar_in_Dos_doesn't_work_so_I_am_using_the_underscore_for_spaces_and_copying_text_from_dos_prompt._I_tried_to_reinstall_OS,but_the_F2_key_isn't_recognized._I_am_unable_to_access_cmos_and_tell_the_computer_to_reboot_to_CDROM_for_software_reinstall._Dell_says_this_is_a_software_problem_and_currently_won't_honor_service_contract._Any_help/suggestions_are_appreciated._I_have_updated_XP,_firewall,_and_AV_on_my_2.5_yr_old_5100.

things_happens_when_I_hit_the_spacebar-It's_just_not_what_I_would_expect._If
_definately_is_dell_problem,_then_I'll_post_on_Dell_site_and_retry_support._Also,software_only_executes_from_start_menu-not_from_desktop.

You have a hardware problem not a Windows XP problem.
Replacing your defective keyboard is likely your only solution.
Did you make any changes in the BIOS? Try using Dell's
recommended default BIOS settings.

I'm with Carey on this one (keyboard problem) but if that doesn't work

other malware?

I called Dell back. This different representative realized immediately
that this had to be a hardware problem. They sent out a new keyboard.
Problem fixed. Thanks helping me rule-out corrupted OS as source of
problem.
