I am buying my first pc.I intend to buy AMD processor.Is Thunderbird the same as Anthlon?I want at least 1GHz processor.And I also want to know its compatible motherboard.I don't know what brand is good for hardisk but I intend to buy at least 30GB DDR SDRAM.I want to play 3D game so I think I will need the excellent graphic card.Which is better,ATI Radeon 32MB DDR or nVIDIA Geforce2 GTS 32MB DDR AGP or Hercules 3D Prophet Kyro 4500 64MB?For sound card I have no idea.Give me an advice.For speakers, which of the two ,Altec Lansing ATP3 or ADA305 USB is better?For monitor,is Sony FD Trinitron 17" Flat monitor is good?For DVD/CD-RW Drive what should I choose?I intend to use intranet in my university and web browsing also.So,what networking device should I use?

Alright here's what i'd get

ASUS A7A266 ALI magik1 chipset
Athlon Thunderbird 1.0ghz 266fsb
IBM or maxtor 30gb 7200rpm ATA-100 drive
Crucial 256mb DDR Memory
The sony fd trintron 17" monitor is awesome
ATP-3 Speakers
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Toshiba 16/40 DVD/CDROM
Plextor CDRW 12x10x40 or the 16x10x40
Any NIC card will do i would reccomend a Linksys LNE-100TX or a 3com905b. Both good cards the linksys is quite a bit cheaper.
What kind of games will you play?? I would go for the Kyro, but that depends on what kind of games you play.

But I would ask you once for a favor. For graphics card, I would choose nVIDIA Ge Pro 32MB DDR.I would not play that sophiscated game.I only want excellent display in video viewing and some old games.And for the refresh rate of Sony,will it be compatible with that graphic card?By the way,I think your system is cool.

id like to see you find a motherboard which can use athlons and 30 gigs of ddr ram... id advise the radeon if youre not really into games... its got better image quality in videos from what i hear though i still havent seen a loss in quality with my geforce...

The refresh rate will be fine. If you can run the monitor at 1024x768 at 75hz. That's what i find is really good for 17" monitors. I think you meant the Geforce2 GTS 32mb ddr right?? If you want the GeForce2 PRO that is 64mb and it has faster memory than the GTS. I think you also meant a 30GB hard drive. As there currently is no way to have 30gb of memory. Be sure that you have adaquate cooling for the athlon without proper cooling the chip will burn out in a matter of secconds.

Pretty soon i'll have to update my system as i have a prebuilt athlon 900 coming. Now i'm wishing that i'd built it but i'm sure i'll be happy with it. The thing i don't know is what video and sound cards it has. :frown: But hopefully it'll be decent, wish me luck.

FWIW there is at least 1 GTPro w\ 32 mb ddr I have one .. it is a leadtek and works just fine
