I have an hp 8560c comp with 500mhz celeron 160mb ram hawk motherboard and 810i intergrated graphics I want to disable the intergrated graphics and add a new video card. The problem is I like to play df2 and apparently I need to use an agp card to get the benefits of 3d acceleration but I have no agp slot and if i use a pci card the game will run in software only mode. Therefore graphics will be improved but no 3d acceleration that bites so what can I do? Is it possible to upgrade my comp to use an agp card?? Delta force support says i must use an agp card that supports 32 bit depth to get 3d acceleration.
Replace your motherboard with an Asus CUSL2-C, this has the 815E chipset with the video connector removed and has an AGP 4x slot. It is known to be just about the fastest Intel motherboard, and will also allow you to overclock your current PPGA CPU and upgrade to a Coppermine (FC-PGA) later.
Although HP used Micro-ATX motherboards, they usually put them in standard ATX cases.
If you have seven slots in the back, the CUSL2-C will fit. If you have less than seven, you will be limmited to the CUSL2-M, a Micro ATX version which only has 4 slots. Your better off with the full height CUSL2-C if your case supports it.
In either situation, before you mount the motherboard, check to make sure you dont have any extra stands sticking up. Most HP cases have one extra stand embosssed into the baseplate which should be flattened slightly and covered with tape to ensure there are no short circuites.
Crashman thanks for your response, how much will your upgrade suggestion cost? Just wondering what will give me the most bang for the buck, a new motherboard and chipset plus video card versus just getting a radeon sdr pci 32mb as I plan on getting a whole new system in about a year or so.
Bang for the buck, you'll get at least 4 times the video performance form the AGP card + board as you will from the PCI card alone, for about twice the price. Actually, the Radeon LE is a good value at under $70, it has the full version Radeon chip and 32MB DDR. Just under $100 if you want the TVO version (TV-Out).
