I have Windows XP Home Edition, and some time ago my computer was invaded by
a Trojan virus. I loaded Norton Antivirus 2005, and asked it to seek out and
destroy the virus, but unfortunately it wiped out my desktop, together with
Explorer, and disabled a number of functions. My Windows was pre-loaded by
Time, who are now in the hands of the receiver. Can anyone tell me what I
should do to restore normality? I am a bit of a novice, so please explain in
detail.

Thanks in advance.

If you allready have a virus, you should have run NAV from the cd, as it
tells you in the instructions, if you suspect a virus.
A virus can v.often disable or otherwise corrupt an AV prog, when you try
and install it

Was your sys supplied with a recovery cd, or is the means to recover on a
hidden partition of your hd?
You may have to refer to the origonal documentation, for details.

I assume your sys will no longer boot up?

Norton did not corrupt your files. You did not follow the proper
procedures.
First, you should have had an AV program installed before you ever connected
to the internet.

Downloading and running an AV program *AFTER* your are infected is like
shutting the barn door after the horse has escaped.

You should have done a pre-install scan form the CD, then installed NAV and
updated it, and then re-scanned in Safe mode.

Your desktop and other system files were corrupted by the trojan and the
numerous viruses you had on your system. Your actions (lack of security
procedures) are responsible.

I can only hope that will you will remember the lesson you have learned
here.
