Since CS is a mod based on the Half-Life engine, you should use OpenGL, which is what the HL engine was designed for. An 85 fps sounds pretty decent. I take it you've changed the engine settings to allow for the 99 fps max that the HL engine can churn out. Usually I average ~99 with drops to the 80's on my PIII866 with a VisionTek GTS 64MB. So I think you're doing fine.

For all you CS players out there, I just wanted you to know that the new [UoM] servers will be going up within 2 weeks. PIII866 with 384MB of RAM on a T1 LAN connection =) Come look for U of M's 13 Acres of Hell. We will be looking for new members soon.

How do you do that?

85 FPS is fine, you might be able to get higher it depends on your monitor though.
If you want to get the maximum FPS possible in the console type "fps_max 100" without the quotes of coarse and your set.
I have a geforce3 and I run 1280x960 (Highest rez half life supports) and I get only 85 FPS because the refresh rate of my monitor is 85 Hz at that rez, when I disabled verticle synch in driver options I got 100 FPS rock solid, but its better to have synch with your monitor from my experience.
BTW I have a 19 inch hitachi monitor, that seems like your limiting factor not your video card in this case.
*note* I got 100 FPS in 1024x768 with a geforce 256 SDR (original geforce not even DDR ram) in all half life games.

One comp I have on my lan has an MX 400 32/MB and gets 99 FPS, and down to 80ish during heavy action. You prolly have your "vsync" turned on which matches your frame rate to your monitor refresh rate. You can turn it off in the Geforce display properties under open GL, which you should change your half life to run under.

Well, in 1024*768 res in OpenGL I used to get 80 to 99 fps all the time on my old voodoo3 PCI. Now I use the Gefroce 2 mx 200 (Shuttle brand) and get a lousy 40 to 99 fps. It averages about 60 to 70 with drops to 40. Voodoo's are highly under rated. Wish they did bisness right and we would have some better videocards instead of these nVidia [-peep-]. I know geforce 2 mx 200 are the bottom of the barrel, but so were voodoo 3's in the 3DFX line. Man I miss UT in GLide........
