The chipset that controls the power input has failed on my Sony Vaio VPC-F13M0E/B and cannot be repaired. The Sony authorised repair agent has quoted a price that would still be uneconomic at half the amount.

The motherboard number is

A1796418A

I really want it fixed but not at any cost. I'm wary of buying a replacement board on ebay or from unknown websites. Getting a second-hand identical model for spares is an option but quite costly.

Any suggestions, advice or warnings would be really appreciated.

Thanks, Brett. I'm sure you are right; i'm just reluctant to actively participate in the "throw-away society". On the other hand, there's no point in throwing good money after bad.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
