I'll start with a reassuring "No I don't know any of the parts mentioned" and give you the problem.

My friend says he can't get beyond 1024 x 768 resolution. He says his 15" monitor has been at 1152 x 864 in the past, and that his graphics card supports at least 1280 x 1024.

He has the latest gfx drivers.

Any ideas.

i think many decent quality monitors can go beyond their specs with regards to refresh rates.
i know my elderly 17" rated for 1280x1024x60 can do 1600x1200 at 48hz interlaced
but it sucks majorly.

as for getting past 1024x768, he could use a refresh rate tool like Hztool or powerstrip to squeeze the most out of it.
but remeber that probably means pushing it beyond its specs... so dont be too suprised if it gets all melty and smelly one summer day
the monitor may not be returning the right info to the operating system either. many old ones dont.
mine doesnt.

Yep.

I thought it might be something to do with refresh rates, but not being an expert, I didn't want to volunteer dud info.

I wondered about the character size at that resolution too. He says he has good eyesight!!! Not for long I reckon.

Thanks guys.
