USB Card reader not working

Solution
sharing my experience: have several card readers and it seemed most would not work on my windows xp computer. turned out that it was the usb extension wire I was plugging into. when I tried directly plugging the readers into the usb port of the computer the problem disappeared. the extension works fine with my printer and at least one of the readers.
Generates a 'Windows Sound', appears in Device Manager but no Options Menu appears. It DOES appear in Win 7 Windows Explorer under Computer as Removable Disk (E) but not in Win 8 so far. Well, it does sometimes but then Windows thinks its a DVD RW as it asks for a disk! Then I discovered that a CD won't read either, though it must have read have read the DVD to install itself. Think I'll shelve it for a month or two and try again after I've reported these bugs...

Tried a couple of different sizes to no avail. At one point it actually appeared in W Explorer as Removable Disk D then prompted me to insert a disk! Needless to say the DVDR RW is not working in Windows Explorer either. Guess they have some work to do...

The plot thickens! Several attempts to use the card reader resulted in the system crashing (instant reset) so I tried it in a USB3 port. No crash, recognised but asked for a disk to be inserted. The 'libraries' progress bar increased rapidly at first then slowed right down. I left it running for over an hour during which time the power settings put the machine to 'sleep'. When I woke it up the contents of the SD card were displayed normally, and the request to 'insert card' had gone. I closed Windows Explorer, opened it again and the card was reading as normal. But when i tried to write to it got error code 0x8007045D indicating an I/O device error. Frustrating as I would like to use Win 8 on a regular basis. I have early stages Parkinsons and find the user interface easier to use than Win 7...
